In order to accommodate the many experience levels and financial challenges of today's young artists, we offer three different opportunities that can either be combined for one great 8-week experience, or a la carte. Dates below incl. arrival and departure date.

SOARS  


A 2-Week Intensive experience featuring opera scenes performance, art song recital, and a recording session

SOARS
is a two-week vocal training program and recording seminar that  offers an exciting opportunity for serious singers to receive operatic and  stage training in standard operatic and art song repertoire culminating in a staged & costumed opera scene performance, art song/aria recital, and a patriotic pops concert. Singers will  also have the opportunity to record several demo tracks that can be used  in future auditions and pre-screenings.  Located in this beautiful lakeside  setting, this two-week intensive focuses on all the tools needed for the  advanced student to gain stage experience and better understand the  recording process, both in hopes of gaining a foothold in a competitive  field.  Led by respected industry professionals, the session will concentrate on preparation of pre-assigned scenes geared specifically towards those students accepted into the program.  In addition, students will benefit from weekly voice lessons, private coachings, workshops on recording, and an audition techniques seminar.  Participants are free to enjoy Bay View Festival concerts as well as all of the outdoor recreation options that northern Michigan offers. The program begins with arrivals on June 9. 

  • Two private 1-hour vocal lessons (BV Voice Faculty)
  • Private coachings with Dr. Casey Robards (Oberlin Conservatory)
  • Staging rehearsals with Sarah Stone (Mezzo-Soprano & Director of Mainstage Opera)
  • Participation in master class
  • Audition seminar with individual critique and feedback of each participants’ promotional materials with Risa Renae Harman (Soprano, BV Voice Faculty)
  • One public recital of aria or art song repertoire of student’s choosing
  • Performance of opera scenes of assigned repertoire
  • Opportunity to record demo tracks (will take home one mastered CD & mp3 files)
  • Pre-recording workshop/discussion with recording engineers about the process of recording from their perspective, limitations and advantages, etc.
  • Opportunity for income from church job singing (Up to $150)

2017 MAINSTAGE MUSICAL THEATRE

A 5-week opportunity to gain leading role experience in a fully staged, semi-professional production

This program offered by Bay View Music Festival is designed to provide singers the opportunity to portray a lead character in one of the world's most beloved musicals, and an important work to have on the resume of a performer able to perform in opera or musical theatre. In addition to the stage experience, participants will be immersed in the study of vocal technique, role preparation, acting technique and the skills necessary to building a career in the arts (networking, resumes, taxes, grant writing, etc).

The Mainstage Musical Theatre program is a unique, intense opportunity to work with other young professionals as well as talented supporting actors from the region.  Upon completion of auditions, roles will be cast when offers are made.  The program begins with arrivals on June 9 and students depart on July 16 after the musical closes. 

Students interested in the mainstage musical theatre program receive training in a special opportunity for those interested in gaining mainstage experience. Fees are all-inclusive, so additional expenses are minimal while at Bay View. Opportunities may include:

  • A role in the mainstage musical production 
  • Weekly voice lessons
  • Coachings with Conductor/Repetiteur as needed
  • Thriving in the Arts seminars on real life skills for a career in music
  • Performance Practice Class for Singers (Art song literature and performance)
  • Classes may include Acting & Feldenkrais, plus workshops in stage combat (as needed)
  • Weekly performance opportunities in recitals
  • Outreach recitals in surrounding communities
  • Audition workshops
  • Resume review, etc. to create the best package possible for auditions
  • Participation in the ensemble for the opera mainstage production in August, plus a nice relaxed schedule to enjoy the area after the musical is over.
  • Jazz/cabaret concert opportunities (optional, not obligatory)

BIZET'S CARMEN 

A 6-week opportunity to gain role experience in a fully staged production in original language

Vocal study at the Bay View Music Festival is designed to provide singers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the study of vocal technique, operatic, art song, role preparation, stage presentation, acting technique and skills necessary to building a career in the arts (networking, resumes, taxes, grant writing, etc).

The Mainstage Opera program is our most comprehensive course of study .  Upon completion of auditions, 12 singers (most are double cast) will be accepted and cast in Carmen.  The program begins with arrivals on June 25.

Students interested in the 6-week opera mainstage program receive training in our flagship opportunity for those interested in gaining mainstage experience in a fully-staged opera in original language. Fees are all-inclusive, so additional expenses are minimal while at Bay View. Courses may include: 

  • A role in the mainstage opera production
  • Weekly voice lessons
  • Coachings with Conductor/Repetiteur as needed
  • Thriving in the Arts seminars on real life skills for a career in music
  • Performance Practice Class for Singers (Art song literature and performance)
  • Classes may include Acting & Feldenkrais, plus workshops in stage combat (as needed)
  • Weekly performance opportunities in recitals
  • Outreach recitals in surrounding communities

  • Participation in festival choir as section leader on Thur. and Sun. nights with solo opportunities
  • Students will be cast in ensemble for community musical theatre production featuring other collegiate singers in the principle roles.

2017 INTENSIVE 

AMERICAN SPIRITUALS INTENSIVE

mccorvey(with Dr. Everett McCorvey) 

A seven-day intensive to study and perform repertoire from the American Negro Spiritual genre.

Join Dr. Everett McCorvey, Director of The American Spiritual Ensemble, Director of Opera at University of Kentucky, and newly appointed Artistic Director of the National Chorale of New York for an intensive residency dedicated to studying this art form, performing in three outreach concerts.

Special minority scholarships for tuition, room and board are available for those selected for one 12 spots. Highlights may include:  

  • Coachings and preparation with Dr. McCorvey 
  • Participate in rehearsals and performances of a traveling show focused on the American Negro Spiritual
  • Community outreach performances
  • Access to all Bay View recreation offerings including beach time, swimming, sailing, etc.
  • Dormitory stay at Crist Hall on Bay View campus
  • Dining privileges at Bay View's campus in Crist Hall with the other students enrolled in the conservatory program
  • Networking opportunities
  • Jazz/cabaret concert opportunities (optional, not obligatory)

SCHOLARSHIPS & FEES

SCHOLARSHIPS: Every student who is accepted is eligible for financial aid, both need and/or merit-based. Scholarships and work study typically defray at least a third of the total tuition, room and board costs. Bay View also arranges for paid church section leader positions pending interest and availability.

COSTS:

SOARS PROGRAM:            $1,750 (All-inclusive after arrival) 
SPIRITUALS INTENSIVE:   $900 (All-inclusive after arrival, generous minority scholarships available)

(Discounts available for participating in two sessions)

SIX WEEK OPERA TUITION:          $1,750 (Includes lessons, coachings, classes, etc.)
SIX WEEK ROOM/BOARD:             $1,550 (Incl. breakfast/lunch/dinner Mon-Fri & brunch/dinner Sat.-Sun.)

NOTE: Avg. student in 2016 paid around $2,200 out-of-pocket.

FIVE WEEK EVITA PRINCIPALS:   $1,400 (Includes lessons, coachings, classes, etc.)
FIVE WEEK ROOM/BOARD:          $1,350 (Incl. breakfast/lunch/dinner Mon-Fri & brunch/dinner Sat.-Sun.)

NOTE: Avg. student in 2016 paid around $1,500 out-of-pocket.

(BONUS: In all opportunities except the Spirituals intensive, students who desire may sing at local churches, for an average of $75/week, further defraying the cost)

ACCOMPANIST:
You will be provided an accompanist for 30 min. of your weekly voice lesson, up to 30 min. of outside rehearsal together, and  performance(s) that week. NOTE: Your tuition includes this, but the accompanist fee is not covered by any scholarships. Excludes American Spirituals Intensive.

ADDITIONAL LESSONS or PRIVATE COACHINGS
Eight one-hour lessons: $400
Eight half-hour lessons: $300
Single hour lessons: $55

PAYMENT OF TUITION AND FEES
A deposit of $350 is due upon notification of acceptance to the Festival. The deposit is required to reserve the place of the student in the Festival and is applied toward tuition, room and board and other expenses. This deposit will be refunded to a student withdrawing from the Festival prior to May 1. No refund of tuition payments are possible for withdrawals after May 1. 

BALANCE OF TUITION AND FEES MUST BE PAID BY 30 DAYS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL.

For American Spirituals Intensive, the deposit of $250 is not charged to the card unless the student cancels after signing contract.


REFUNDS

Refunds of Tuition and Room and Board expenses (excluding the non-refundable $350 confirmation deposit) for withdrawal from the Festival will be made on the following basis:

  • 80% - Withdrawal by April 15
  • 50% - Withdrawal by May 1
  • Non-refundable - Withdrawal after May 1

There is no refund for missed lessons. If the instructor is notified at least 24 hours in advance of a cancelled lesson, the lesson may be made up at the discretion of the instructor.
