Timothy Noble

Timothy Noble is a world-famous baritone who is known as one of the great interpreters of Giuseppe Verdi’s lead male operatic roles, from Rigoletto to Falstaff. He’s enjoyed 22 years of performing in the most esteemed international opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Netherlands Opera. True to his Indiana roots, the 1963 graduate of Peru High School also has recorded a disc of Cole Porter songs, Simply Cole. Yet, with all the accolades he’s enjoyed for his versatile artistry as a singer, it is his career as a professor of music that he has fully invested himself since 1999. His students’ high regard for him tells the story of his impact: 46 students from the School of Music, including all 23 from his studio, nominated him for the Distinguished Professorship. Noble’s music career is as long and varied as it is celebrated. As a young man, he toured with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians as a singer and music director of the Waring Blendors; he was also a successful Broadway performer. Noble also has published popular sheet music, and his musical recordings range from the Cole Porter disc to his Grammy-nominated recording of The Music Man with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. “He has had a great career, not only with the Metropolitan Opera, but in Italy and many other countries in Europe,” said Virginia Zeani, IU Distinguished Professor of music. “His dedication has made him one of the most important voice teachers in America. He also composes, is a great musician and is dedicated to his students—as we say in Italian, corpo ed anima—body and soul.”

Festival Chorus

Directed by Chris Ludwa, the Festival Chorus has a Thursday and Sunday evening rehearsal and a Sunday evening performance at Vespers. All Student Artists are required to participate in the Festival Chorus.

Responsibilities of the Student Vocal Artist

The primary responsibility of the Student Artists is to enrich the cultural life of the Bay View community through performance. Each summer one musical and one opera are performed in a fully costumed and staged production at the Bay View Festival. Singers will be assigned roles suitable to their voice type and experience and to fill the casting needs of each production and are expected to perform as cast. Roles in the opera are double cast whenever possible. Singers are involved in "load-in" and "strike" for all productions.

Additionally, Student Vocal Artists will perform with the Bay View Festival Chorus. An integral feature of the musical and cultural life in Bay View, the Festival Chorus of 80-100 voices rehearses two hours each Friday evening and sings on each of the Sunday Vesper concerts. The Bay View Festival Chorus is a community chorus consisting of local residents. Performances at social and promotional venues are also a part of the student artist’s responsibilities. Each Friday, Student Artists are featured in a recital in the John Hall Auditorium. While performance at the Friday recitals is voluntary, this is a wonderful opportunity to try out new music for a very appreciative and discerning audience.

What the Student Artist Receives in Return

The Bay View Festival supports its Student Artists with generous scholarships. All students are required to live and board in Crist Hall for the entire eight-week session. Student Artists are invited to take part in all Bay View recreation and cultural activities. Scholarship recipients must participate in the Bay View Festival Chorus.

The Student Artist receives one vocal lesson per week from the Bay View Artist faculty and participates in classes in acting, vocal literature, and "Thriving in the Arts." All productions receive full musical coaching by the Artist Faculty as well as in depth stage instruction in a positive learning atmosphere. In the second week of the festival, Student Artists may audition for The Adrian Boyer Vocal Competition. For the two winners, cash prizes are awarded and a performance with the Bay View Chamber Orchestra.

Singers may wish to contact teachers prior to the beginning of the season to discuss goals for the summer and repertoire. Other instruction important in the training of the singing artist (music theory, yoga, and dance) is available at a nominal cost.

Bay View offers a great opportunity to expand your resume and get to know the Faculty Artist members who actively perform and teach throughout the United States. In addition to adding full productions to your repertoire, you will work with significant coaches, voice teachers, and conductors. Each year, the Virginia Crouse Artist Series brings guest vocal artists of international reputation to campus for master classes with the Student Artists. Past artists have included Sherrill Milnes, Virginia Zeani, Giorgio Tozzi, Martina Arroya, Diana Soviero and George Shirley.

Who Should Apply

Bay View Student Artists ranges in age from 20 to the mid-30’s and are either still pursuing their studies or have recently graduated. Successful applicants possess a well-developed vocal technique, good musicianship and languages, and communicate well with the audience both physically and vocally and are seeking to expand their performing experience beyond the university setting. Bay View Student Artists have gone on to participate in prestigious apprentice programs and now sing in regional, national and international opera houses. Approximately sixteen singers are chosen each year to participate as Bay View Student Artists. The selection of each singer is based on talent and the casting needs of the musical and opera productions. All singers must be in residence for the entire eight-week program.
